❦ What is web revival?

Web revival is a decentralized movement about putting the internet back in the hands of individual people. I’ll explain this by painting you a picture with words, of what the internet could be.

Imagine a place filled with people each sculpting entire worlds of their own, in each their own ways. It’s amazing, it’s beautiful, each one is beautiful. You look closer at one, and see someone gushing about their passions, even embedding them into the very space. Another, and here’s a person playing with the very essences of ideas, twisting them about into feelings and understandings and turning them over and over until they are unwound. Another. And another. More and more and…

You pull back a bit. Just how many of these are there? You start to look around, and you see tens, hundreds, thousands? You start to notice something. Each of these worlds, they’re not just all isolated on their lonesome. Worlds are connected with strands to others, and there are these fantastic structures pulled together; clusters and rings and branches and splits. It’s a whole galaxy. Each tiny dot a world, a whole world, full of things dear to a person.

If you wanted to, you could easily spend your whole life exploring this expanse and not even cover a small region of it. And, it’s constantly ebbing and flowing and breathing and growing; you can see it.

Okay, so you’ve pictured all that, and it’s a damn shame it doesn’t exist, right? What was the point of me asking you to do that? Just to make you sad you’ll never get to have that? Well, guess what… that place actually exists!

Comment: maybe in the future here have like, in the background opacity (increase on scroll, like one by one) on a ton of different iframes of websites and stuff, so like they pop up; or maybe like instead of on scroll do a button so it doesn’t get ahead of me

There are 1.5 million personal websites on Neocities, which is just one free web host (place to put your website up). If you haven’t already, when you’re done here, take a wander around some of the links on this site, and you’ll start to see what I was just talking about.

Web revival is a decentralized movement, which means it’s a bunch of different people and groups, and some of them may not even think of it with the term “web revival” at all. It’s about putting the internet back in our hands, because the internet –this internet– is beautiful, and it’s most certainly here. That’s really what this website is about, actually; sharing the things I love in the internet with you.

So… If you wanna see more of this galaxy, and the web revival breathing even more life into it, I’ve got a few places you can start ^^

Make your own website
You can make and host a website for free, really easily if you want. If you have a google doc, you can turn it into a website with odie, in a matter of minutes. If you have some files in a folder, you can turn them into a website too with blot.im (though this costs 6$ a month, so really, there are better options).

If you want a little more customization, strawpage or a static site builder.
carrd and make multiple maybe to act as multiple webpages?
need to find that essay like where they're like "I believe everyone should have a website, and beggars can't be choosers"

Say the piece abt like, change your local world, that’s much easier than the whole world (and it’s how the whole world gets changed too); get your friends and people you’re close to away from artificial incompetence, tell them about web revival and link them some web revival resources ^^ (it don’t gotta be uwusearch lol) set up webmentions https://webmention.net/ mention somewhere here probably the gemini protocol? or just put it in find websites (which will eventually be just like ‘search’ or smth) https://letsdecentralize.org/
A few additional things
talk about people being like 'what would I put on a website' (if I don't already get to it way before) talk about, if you think you're bad with technology, consider - maybe it's the technology that is bad, even [intentionally so]. https://thinkings.space/of-mechanical-compliance/ (actually maybe add this into the more reading bit, like in the previous section) If you don't think you have enough time for this internet, consider this: you use a search engine, don't you? Are you not saying with that then, "I have enough time to give to a massive corporation, to get their answers, but not enough time to give to getting answers and understanding from my fellow individual humans"? * "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." - The Lorax "It's lonely shouting into the void" one thing you can do is to make a website together with some friends - your website doesn't have to be a one person project https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOcnj-0lzeA https://status.cafe/, imood https://iframe.chat/
